FAQs

Q: What is the difference between the DCS-7280CR3K-36A-R and -F models?
A: The -R suffix indicates rear-to-front airflow (intake from port side, exhaust from rear), while the -F model has front-to-rear airflow. The -R model is designed for hot aisle deployments where warm air exhausts toward the back of the rack.

Q: Can the 36 ports be configured at different speeds?
A: Yes, the ports support flexible breakout configurations. The 28 base QSFP28 ports can run at 100G, 50G, 40G, 25G, or 10G. Six ports support 200G operation, and two QSFP-DD uplink ports support 400G, 200G, or 100G line rates.

Q: Does this switch support internet-scale BGP routing tables?
A: Yes, the K-variant includes Arista's FlexRoute engine with large route table support, scaling to over 5 million IPv4 routes and 5 million IPv6 routes in hardware, making it suitable for internet peering, service provider edge, and DCI applications.

Q: What network virtualization and overlay protocols are supported?
A: The 7280R3 supports VXLAN routing and bridging, EVPN control plane, MPLS with LDP and RSVP-TE, Segment Routing, BGP Labeled Unicast, and 512-way ECMP for advanced multi-tenant and overlay network architectures.

Q: Is software licensing required for full Layer 3 functionality?
A: Arista EOS includes comprehensive Layer 2 and Layer 3 features, advanced routing protocols, and automation capabilities as part of the base software. No additional feature licenses are required to enable BGP, OSPF, MPLS, or VXLAN functionality.
