FAQs

Q: What is the difference between the base model and the FLX licensed version?
A: The FLX license unlocks advanced routing and switching features including full routing tables up to 2 million routes, advanced MPLS LER/LSR capabilities, EVPN, VXLAN, Segment Routing, and over 24,000 ACL entries. The base model has more limited routing table size (256K routes) and basic MPLS LSR only.

Q: What optic types are supported on this switch?
A: The 48 QSFP ports support 100GBASE QSFP28 optics and 40GBASE QSFP+ optics with breakout support for 4x25G, 4x10G, or 2x50G. The 6 QSFP-DD ports support 400GBASE QSFP-DD and 200GBASE optics. All ports support standard Arista or compatible transceivers including SR, LR, ER, and AOC/DAC cables.

Q: What network architectures is this switch designed for?
A: The 7280CR3A-48D6 is ideal for leaf-spine data center fabrics, high-performance storage networks, Internet exchanges, and content delivery networks. It supports MLAG for Layer 2 designs, ECMP for Layer 3 designs, and EVPN-VXLAN overlay architectures with deep buffers to handle incast and burst traffic scenarios.

Q: Does this switch support MACsec encryption?
A: The base 7280CR3A model does not include MACsec encryption. For encryption capabilities, you need the 7280CR3AM model which includes IEEE 802.1AE MACsec on all ports, or the 7280CR3AK model which adds TunnelSec encryption along with large routing tables.

Q: What is the airflow direction and what does the -F suffix indicate?
A: The -F suffix indicates front-to-rear (port-side to fan-side) airflow, also called red airflow in Arista terminology. This model includes 2x AC power supplies. The -R variant offers rear-to-front airflow, while the # suffix denotes configurable fans and PSU for flexible deployment.
