FAQs

Q: Does the MS425-16-HW require a Meraki cloud license to operate?
A: Yes, all Meraki hardware requires an active cloud license to function. The MS425-16-HW is sold as hardware only and requires a separate Enterprise or Advanced Security license subscription. Without an active license, the switch will not pass traffic.

Q: Can the MS425-16-HW be stacked with other Meraki switches?
A: Yes, the MS425-16-HW supports physical stacking via the 2x 40G QSFP+ ports using MA-CBL-40G stacking cables, providing up to 160 Gbps stacking bandwidth. It also supports Meraki's virtual stacking feature, allowing management of thousands of switch ports as a single logical unit through the cloud dashboard without physical connections.

Q: What Layer 3 routing protocols does the MS425-16-HW support?
A: The MS425-16-HW supports static routing, OSPFv2 dynamic routing, multicast routing, VRRP warm spare for gateway redundancy, and functions as DHCP relay or DHCP server. Note that OSPF and warm spare cannot operate concurrently on the same switch, so choose based on your network design requirements.

Q: What type of SFP+ and QSFP+ modules are compatible with this switch?
A: The MS425-16-HW supports standard 10G SFP+ modules for the 16 fiber ports and 40G QSFP+ modules for the uplink/stacking ports. Meraki does not lock out third-party optics, so both Cisco-branded and compatible third-party transceivers can be used. Refer to the Meraki SFP datasheet for detailed compatibility information.

Q: Is the MS425-16-HW suitable for data center or aggregation layer deployments?
A: Yes, the MS425-16-HW is specifically designed as an aggregation switch for medium to large campus networks. With 480 Gbps switching capacity, Layer 3 routing, hot-swappable redundant power supplies, and high-speed 40G uplinks, it is well-suited for aggregating traffic from access-layer switches in enterprise campus or regional data center environments.
