Description

The Catalyst 4500-X is a fixed-configuration 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation switch built for campus LAN core and distribution layers, and for 10GE aggregation in enterprise and data-centre access and aggregation deployments. This SKU provides 16 SFP+/SFP ports and an optional hot-swappable uplink module slot.

The 16 SFP+ ports run at 10GE and also accept 1GE SFP optics, so existing gigabit optics can be reused and moved to 10GE later. Switching capacity is up to 800 Gbps, with hardware forwarding of up to 250 Mpps for IPv4 and 125 Mpps for IPv6. It ships with the IP Base feature set, uses back-to-front airflow and is supplied without power supplies. Because airflow is back-to-front, matching airflow power supplies are needed. There is no PoE on this model.

The optional network module slot takes the 8 x 10GE uplink module, C4KX-NM-8SFP+, for expanded port density. Both SFP+ (10GE) and SFP (1GE) optics are supported.

Q: What power supplies does it need?
A: It is supplied without power supplies. Catalyst 4500-X power supplies are required, and because this model uses back-to-front airflow the supplies must match that airflow direction.

A: Yes. The optional network module slot accepts the 8 x 10GE uplink module, C4KX-NM-8SFP+.

Q: Does it support 1G optics as well as 10G?
A: Yes. The SFP+ ports accept both SFP+ (10GE) and SFP (1GE) optics.
