Description

The Cisco Embedded Services 3300 Series (ESS 3300) is a board-level Ethernet switch for system integrators who need to build custom, rugged, low-power networking into their own hardware. This ESS-3300-NCP-A is the mainboard only with no cooling plate, supplied with the Network Advantage software image, and measures just 103 mm x 96 mm and 81 g. It suits defence, oil and gas, transportation and mining designs, including tactical data centres, HD video surveillance and self-driving vehicles.

The mainboard provides 2 x 1G/10GE SFP+ uplinks, 4 x 1G combo ports (10/100/1000BASE-T or 1G/100M SFP) and 4 x 10/100/1000BASE-T ports, with RS-232 and USB console access. It has 4 GB DDR4 DRAM and 4 GB onboard eMMC flash, forwards at line rate on all ports and packet sizes, and runs Cisco IOS XE. It is powered from +3.3Vdc and +5Vdc inputs supplied by the integrator's carrier board, with 16 W typical consumption for the mainboard alone.

Network Advantage adds Layer 3 routing, VRF-lite, PIM, HSRP/VRRP, BFD and MACsec-256 on top of the Network Essentials feature set. The optional 16-port expansion board connects through board-to-board connectors, and the board works with Cisco SFP and SFP+ optics such as GLC-SX-MM, GLC-LH-SM, SFP-10G-SR and SFP-10G-LR.

FAQs

Q: Which software image does this SKU run?
A: It runs Cisco IOS XE with the Network Advantage image. This adds Layer 3 routing, VRF-lite, PIM, HSRP/VRRP, BFD and MACsec-256 over the Network Essentials feature set.

Q: How is the board powered?
A: It needs +3.3Vdc and +5Vdc (+/-3%) supplied by the integrator's carrier or system board. Typical consumption is 16 W for the mainboard alone. There is no onboard PoE supply.

Q: What does the 'NCP' in the SKU mean?
A: NCP means No Cooling Plate. This is the mainboard only, and thermal management is handled by the integrator's own enclosure design.

Q: Can I add more ports to this board?
A: Yes. An optional 16-port expansion board (ESS-3300-16T-NCP or -CON) connects through board-to-board connectors. It is a separate item and is not part of the -NCP-A mainboard SKU.

Q: Which optics work with the SFP+ uplinks?
A: Supported Cisco optics include GLC-SX-MM, GLC-LH-SM, GLC-TE, SFP-10G-SR, SFP-10G-LR, SFP-10G-ER, SFP-H10G-CU1M and SFP-10G-T-X, plus CWDM and DWDM SFPs.
