Q: What is the difference between PoE+ and UPOE on this switch?
A: Standard PoE+ delivers up to 30W per port (IEEE 802.3at), while Cisco Universal PoE (UPOE) provides up to 60W per port. This enables the WS-C3850-48U-S to power high-wattage devices such as VDI thin clients, pan-tilt-zoom cameras, building automation systems, and advanced Wi-Fi 6 access points that require more than 30W.

Q: Does the WS-C3850-48U-S come with uplink ports?
A: The base switch includes one network module slot but does not ship with an uplink module by default. Customers can add optional network modules at purchase or later: C3850-NM-4-1G (4x1G SFP), C3850-NM-2-10G (4x1G SFP or 2x10G SFP+), or C3850-NM-4-10G (4x10G SFP+). The 4x10G module is supported on 48-port models only.

Q: What is the IP Base license, and can it be upgraded?
A: The IP Base license includes Layer 3 routing protocols (static routing, RIP, EIGRP, OSPF), advanced QoS, VRF-Lite, and the integrated wireless controller. It can be upgraded to IP Services license for additional features such as BGP, IS-IS, full VRF support, and advanced multicast routing.

Q: Can I stack this switch with other Catalyst 3850 models?
A: Yes, the WS-C3850-48U-S supports Cisco StackWise-480 and can be stacked with other Catalyst 3850 Series switches (including different port counts and PoE variants) for unified management, redundancy, and 480 Gbps of stack bandwidth. Up to 9 switches can be stacked together.
