Q: What is the difference between IP Services and IP Base licensing?
A: IP Services provides full enterprise Layer 3 routing with advanced protocols including EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, PIM, and full IPv6 routing (OSPFv3, EIGRPv6). IP Base offers entry-level Layer 3 routing with static routing and RIP. The WS-C3850-48T-E comes pre-licensed with IP Services for advanced routing deployments.

Q: Does this model support PoE or Power over Ethernet?
A: No, the WS-C3850-48T-E is a data-only model without PoE capability. For PoE+ support on 48 ports, consider the WS-C3850-48P-E (435W budget) or WS-C3850-48F-E (800W budget). For UPOE, the WS-C3850-48U-E is available.

Q: What uplink modules are compatible with this switch?
A: The 48-port models support three network modules: C3850-NM-4-1G (4x 1G SFP), C3850-NM-2-10G (4x 1G SFP / 2x 10G SFP+), and C3850-NM-4-10G (4x 10G SFP+). Modules are sold separately and hot-swappable. The default configuration does not include an uplink module.

Q: Can this switch function as a wireless controller?
A: Yes, with IP Services licensing the Catalyst 3850 can operate as an integrated wireless controller (mobility controller or mobility agent). A single switch supports up to 100 access points and 2,000 wireless clients. Separate access point licenses are required for mobility controller mode.

Q: How many switches can be stacked together?
A: Up to 9 Catalyst 3850 switches with the same feature set can be stacked using StackWise-480 technology, providing 480 Gbps of stack bandwidth. Mixed stacks of different license levels (LAN Base, IP Base, IP Services) are not supported. Stacking cables are sold separately.
