FAQs

Q: What is Multigigabit Ethernet and what cabling does it support?
A: Multigigabit Ethernet (mGig) allows the switch to auto-negotiate speeds of 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps, 5Gbps, and 10Gbps on standard twisted-pair cabling. It supports IEEE 802.3bz standard and works with existing Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6a cables, enabling you to deliver multi-gigabit speeds to 802.11ac Wave 2 access points without rewiring.

Q: What is the difference between LAN Base and IP Services feature sets?
A: LAN Base provides comprehensive Layer 2 switching, up to 255 VLANs, static routing, RIP, and OSPF stub routing. It includes StackWise-480 and StackPower support. IP Services (available as an upgrade) adds full Layer 3 routing including BGP, EIGRP, policy-based routing, and built-in wireless controller functionality for managing up to 100 access points per stack.

Q: Can this switch act as a wireless LAN controller?
A: The WS-C3850-24XU-L ships with LAN Base license and does not include wireless controller capabilities. You can upgrade to IP Base or IP Services license via software activation to enable wireless controller functionality, which supports up to 50-100 access points and 2,000 wireless clients per switch or stack.

Q: What network modules are compatible with this switch?
A: The WS-C3850-24XU-L supports C3850-NM-2-10G (2x 10G SFP+), C3850-NM-4-1G (4x 1G SFP), C3850-NM-8x10G (8x 10G SFP+), and C3850-NM-2x40G (2x 40G QSFP+) uplink modules. All modules are sold separately and field-replaceable.

Q: Does the switch support stacking and power redundancy?
A: Yes, the WS-C3850-24XU-L supports StackWise-480 technology with 480 Gbps stacking bandwidth for up to 9 switches. It also supports Cisco StackPower, allowing power supplies to be shared across the stack for redundancy. StackPower cables must be purchased separately for LAN Base models.
