FAQs

Q: What is Cisco UPOE and how much power does it provide?
A: Cisco Universal Power over Ethernet (UPOE) delivers up to 60W per port, exceeding the 30W limit of standard PoE+ (802.3at). This enables power for high-demand devices such as next-generation wireless access points, video collaboration endpoints, and building automation systems. The WS-C3850-24U-S provides 800W total PoE budget.

Q: What network modules are compatible with the WS-C3850-24U-S?
A: The switch includes one modular uplink slot supporting C3850-NM-4-1G (4x 1G SFP) and C3850-NM-2-10G (4x 1G SFP or 2x 10G SFP+) network modules. Note that C3850-NM-4-10G is not supported on 24-port models. Network modules are sold separately and are hot-swappable.

Q: Can the WS-C3850-24U-S stack with other Catalyst 3850 switches?
A: Yes, using StackWise-480 technology, this switch stacks with other Catalyst 3850 IP Base switches, providing 480 Gbps stacking bandwidth. However, IP Base switches cannot stack with LAN Base or IP Services models. Up to 9 switches can be stacked and managed as a single unit.

Q: Does this switch include a wireless controller?
A: Yes, the Catalyst 3850 Series includes an integrated wireless controller supporting up to 100 Cisco Aironet access points and 2,000 wireless clients per switch or stack with 40 Gbps wireless throughput, enabling unified wired and wireless management.

Q: What is the difference between IP Base and IP Services feature sets?
A: IP Base provides essential Layer 2 switching and limited Layer 3 routing capabilities including static routing and RIP. IP Services (available on -E models) adds advanced routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, and full multicast routing. The IP Base license is upgradeable to IP Services.
