The Cisco Catalyst 3850-24S-S is a stackable Layer 3 enterprise access switch designed for converged wired and wireless networks. With 24 Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports and one hot-swappable network module slot for flexible uplinks, this switch delivers 92 Gbps switching capacity and StackWise-480 technology for high-availability deployments. The IP Base feature set provides comprehensive Layer 2 switching, up to 1000 VLANs, and entry-level Layer 3 routing capabilities including wireless controller functionality.

A: The WS-C3850-24S-S supports C3850-NM-4-10G (4x 10G SFP+), C3850-NM-8-10G (8x 10G SFP+), and C3850-NM-2-40G (2x 40G QSFP+) modules for high-speed uplinks. Note that C3850-NM-4-1G and C3850-NM-2-10G modules are not supported on 24-port SFP models.

Q: Can this switch operate as a wireless controller?
A: Yes, with the IP Base license, the WS-C3850-24S-S can operate as a Mobility Agent (default mode) to terminate CAPWAP tunnels from access points and support up to 100 access points and 2,000 wireless clients per switch. It can be configured as a Mobility Controller via CLI for additional wireless coordination functions.

Q: Can I stack this switch with other Catalyst 3850 models?
A: Yes, the WS-C3850-24S-S supports StackWise-480 for stacking up to 9 switches with 480 Gbps stack bandwidth. However, IP Base switches can only stack with other Catalyst 3850 IP Base switches; mixed stacking with LAN Base or IP Services models is not supported.

Q: What Layer 3 routing protocols are supported with IP Base?
A: IP Base provides entry-level Layer 3 routing including static routing, RIP, and routed access capabilities. For advanced routing protocols such as EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, and PIM, the IP Services feature set is required.

Q: Does this switch support Power over Ethernet?
A: No, the WS-C3850-24S-S does not support PoE. It has 24 SFP fiber ports without PoE capability. For PoE requirements, consider the WS-C3850-24P-S or WS-C3850-24U-S models.
