FAQs

Q: What uplink modules are compatible with the WS-C3850-24S-E?
A: This switch supports two network modules via its single modular slot: the C3850-NM-4-1G (4 x 1 Gigabit Ethernet) and the C3850-NM-2-10G (2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet). Note that not all 3850 network modules are compatible with the 24S models; consult the compatibility matrix for details.

Q: Does the WS-C3850-24S-E support Power over Ethernet?
A: No, the WS-C3850-24S-E is a non-PoE switch with SFP fiber ports only. If PoE is required, consider the WS-C3850-24P-E (24 copper PoE+ ports) or WS-C3850-24U-E (24 mGig UPoE ports) models.

Q: What is the difference between IP Services and IP Base on Catalyst 3850?
A: IP Services provides full Layer 3 routing capabilities including advanced routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP), IPv6 routing, multicast routing (PIM), policy-based routing, and advanced QoS. IP Base offers limited Layer 3 with static routing and RIP only. The IP Services feature set also supports up to 4,000 VLANs compared to 1,000 on IP Base.

Q: Can this switch function as a wireless controller?
A: Yes, the Catalyst 3850 Series includes an integrated wireless controller capable of managing up to 100 access points and 2,000 wireless clients per switch or stack. This provides wired-wireless convergence on a single platform with uniform policy enforcement via the Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) ASIC.

Q: Is the WS-C3850-24S-E still supported by Cisco?
A: The Catalyst 3850 Series reached End of Sale in 2020 and has a Last Day of Support date of April 30, 2027. Cisco recommends the Catalyst 9300 Series (specifically the C9300-24S) as the replacement platform, offering higher performance and newer software features.
