Description

The NCS 540 N540X-16Z4G8Q2C-MD is a 1RU, temperature-hardened, low-power carrier-class router from the Cisco Network Convergence System 540 Medium Density family, running Cisco IOS XR. It is built for mobile backhaul, 5G transport and access or pre-aggregation in indoor or outdoor cabinets where depth, power draw and precise timing matter.

This DC-powered variant combines 16 x 1GE/10GE SFP/SFP+ ports, 8 x 1GE/10GE/25GE SFP/SFP+/SFP28 ports, 2 x 40GE/100GE QSFP28 ports and 4 x 1GE RJ-45 copper ports, with forwarding performance of up to 300 Mpps. An 8-core 1.7GHz x86 CPU, 8GB DRAM and 32GB storage support the carrier-class software. Power comes from fixed dual redundant DC supplies, and the unit is rated for -40C to +70C operation at 1,000 ft.

Timing is a core strength, with SyncE, IEEE 1588 PTP, Class C support and an integrated GNSS receiver with BITS, 1pps, 10MHz and ToD interfaces. Optics are chosen from the Cisco Transceiver Module Group compatibility matrix for NCS 540, and DC rackmount kits and a cable bracket are available for installation.

FAQs

Q: What software does this router run and is a licence needed?
A: It runs Cisco IOS XR. Additional capacity and feature licences are sold as Right-to-Use or Software Innovation Access subscriptions in Access Essentials and Access Advantage tiers, per 10G.

Q: What power does the N540X-16Z4G8Q2C-MD use?
A: It uses fixed dual redundant DC power supplies with a family DC input range of -40V to -72V. Family power draw is under 100W minimum, under 200W typical and 250W maximum. It does not provide PoE.

Q: Which optics can I use in the SFP+, SFP28 and QSFP28 ports?
A: Supported transceivers are listed in the Cisco Transceiver Module Group (TMG) Compatibility Matrix for NCS 540. The ports accept 1G/10G SFP/SFP+, 25G SFP28 and 40G/100G QSFP28 modules.

Q: Does it support precise timing for mobile networks?
A: Yes. It supports SyncE and IEEE 1588 PTP with Class C timing, and has an integrated GNSS receiver plus BITS, 1pps, 10MHz and ToD interfaces.

Q: How does the -MD variant differ from other N540X-16Z4G8Q2C models?
A: The -MD suffix is the DC-powered variant, with dual redundant DC supplies. The AC variant uses a fixed single AC supply instead.
