Description

The NCS 540 Front Haul Cell Site Router is a 1RU router in Cisco's Network Convergence System 540 family, built for IP RAN and mobile transport. It handles front-haul and mid-haul aggregation for GSM, UMTS, LTE, CDMA and 5G sites, including CPRI transport, and runs Cisco IOS-XR.

This cell site router variant provides 8 CPRI ports and 4 CPRI/1G/10G ports, 2 TSN 10G/25G ports, 8 x 1G/10G ports, 4 x 1G/10G/25G SFP+ ports and 2 x 100G QSFP ports. Timing is covered by a built-in GNSS receiver, BITS input and output, 1PPS and ToD, and 10MHz interfaces. Two load-sharing power supplies are fitted, and either one can carry the full system load. It differs from the N540-FH-AGG-SYS aggregation model, which offers 24 TSN/CPRI/1/10/25G ports and 4 x 100G ports.

Supported optics are listed in the Cisco Transceiver Module Group Compatibility Matrix. Dual-rate port operation needs a supported SFP, and Cisco recommends ports 14 to 25 for 25G core use.

FAQs

Q: How does this model differ from the N540-FH-AGG-SYS?
A: The N540-FH-CSR-SYS is the cell site router variant with 8 CPRI, 4 CPRI/1G/10G, 2 TSN 10G/25G, 8 x 1G/10G, 4 x 1G/10G/25G and 2 x 100G ports. The N540-FH-AGG-SYS is the aggregation variant with 24 TSN/CPRI/1/10/25G ports and 4 x 100G ports.

Q: How is the router powered?
A: It has dual power supplies that share the load, and either one can carry the full system load, giving power redundancy.

Q: Which optics does it support?
A: Supported optics are listed in the Cisco Transceiver Module Group (TMG) Compatibility Matrix. Dual-rate port operation needs a supported SFP.

Q: Which ports should I use for 25G core connections?
A: Cisco recommends ports 14 to 25 for 25G core use, as optics on 25G ports 12 and 13 can hit a packet-corruption issue after repeated shut and no-shut cycles.

Q: What synchronisation interfaces does it provide?
A: It has a built-in GNSS receiver, BITS input and output, 1PPS and ToD via RJ-45, and 10MHz and 1PPS SMB connectors on the front panel. The GNSS input needs an active antenna with an LNA.
