Description

The ISR 4221X is an entry-level modular branch-office router from the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers family. It suits small and remote branch offices with limited IT resources that need application-aware WAN connectivity, and it is designed to run Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN features over MPLS, VPN and Internet links.

The X variant has 8 GB of fixed DDR3 ECC DRAM and 8 GB of fixed flash. Connectivity comes from two onboard 10/100/1000 RJ-45 WAN/LAN ports plus one SFP-based port, with two NIM slots for WAN, LAN, voice and cellular expansion. Aggregate throughput is 35 Mbps by default, rising to 75 Mbps with the Performance licence, or 1.2 Gbps CEF-only with the Boost licence. It ships with the IP Base technology package, and Security and Application Experience bundles are available separately.

Power is by external AC supply, 100 to 240 VAC autoranging, with a maximum draw of 90 W. The 1 RU chassis can be wall-mounted or fitted into a 19-inch rack with the optional kit. The two NIM slots share a single 1 Gbps connection to the route processor, and there are no SM-X slots.

FAQs

Q: Which licence tier does this router ship with?
A: It ships with the IP Base technology package. Throughput is 35 Mbps by default, and the Performance and Boost licences raise the ceiling. Security and Application Experience bundles are sold under separate part numbers.

Q: How is the ISR4221X/K9 different from the standard ISR4221/K9?
A: The X variant has 8 GB of fixed DRAM, while the standard model has 4 GB. Both have 8 GB of flash, two onboard Gigabit Ethernet ports and two NIM slots.

Q: Does it support PoE or redundant power?
A: No. It uses a single external AC power supply, 100 to 240 VAC, with a maximum draw of 90 W. PoE and a redundant power supply are not supported.

Q: Can the memory or flash be upgraded?
A: No. The 8 GB DRAM and 8 GB flash are fixed and cannot be upgraded.

Q: Can it take voice or cellular modules?
A: It has two NIM slots for WAN, LAN, voice and cellular expansion. There are no SM-X slots, and both NIM slots share a single 1 Gbps connection to the route processor. The UC (Voice) bundles are not supported on this model.
