Description

The ISR 4221 is a branch-office Integrated Services Router from the Cisco 4000 Series ISR family, supplied as the Security (SEC) bundle. It suits lean-IT sites that need WAN edge routing, secure VPN connectivity and Catalyst SD-WAN connectivity back to data centres and public cloud over MPLS, VPN and internet links.

The router provides two onboard 10/100/1000 RJ-45 WAN/LAN ports and one SFP-based port, plus two NIM slots for interfaces such as LTE, serial and T1/E1 modules. Aggregate throughput is 35 Mbps by default and up to 75 Mbps with the Performance licence, while CEF-only throughput can reach 1.2 Gbps with the Boost licence. It carries 4 GB of DDR3 ECC DRAM and 8 GB of flash. This SKU includes the Security (SEC) licence bundle with the IOS XE Security technology package, and embedded IPsec VPN hardware acceleration supports secure WAN links.

The NIM slots do not support SM-X service modules or online insertion and removal, so power down before changing modules. The 1RU chassis uses an external AC power supply (100-240 VAC), can be wall-mounted, and accepts an optional 19-inch rack-mount kit.

Q: What licence does this SKU include?
A: This is the Security (SEC) bundle, which includes the Cisco IOS XE Security technology package. Performance and Boost throughput licences are separate options.

Q: How can throughput be increased?
A: Aggregate throughput is 35 Mbps by default and rises to 75 Mbps with the Performance licence. The Boost licence raises CEF-only throughput up to 1.2 Gbps.

Q: What modules can it take?
A: It has two NIM slots for modules such as LTE, serial and T1/E1. SM-X service modules are not supported, and modules cannot be inserted or removed while powered.

Q: Does it support PoE or a redundant power supply?
A: No. It uses a single external AC power supply (100-240 VAC) and does not provide PoE or a redundant or DC power option.

Q: Can it be rack mounted?
A: Yes. It is a 1RU unit that fits a 19-inch rack with the optional rack-mount kit, and it can also be wall-mounted.
