Description

The Catalyst 9166I is an enterprise indoor Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) access point for high-density deployments such as all-wireless offices, high-definition collaboration, 4K/8K video and IoT. It is part of the Catalyst 9166 series and uses integrated omnidirectional antennas, so it suits standard ceiling mounting rather than high-bay areas. This CW9166I-Z is the Regulatory Domain Z (Reg-Z) variant, managed on-premises from a Catalyst 9800 controller.

Three 4x4 radios cover the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands, with an XOR radio that shifts capacity between 6 GHz and a secondary 5 GHz radio. PHY data rates reach up to 7.78 Gbps, and uplink is a single 100M/1000M/2.5G/5G Multigigabit Ethernet RJ-45 port. It also provides a management console port, a USB 2.0 port (4.5 W), Bluetooth 5.1 BLE and built-in environmental sensors. Power comes from 802.3bt (UPOE), 802.3at (PoE+) or a 54V DC input, with a maximum draw of 30.5 W on 802.3bt.

The AP runs Cisco IOS XE 17.9.1 or later and is managed by Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controllers, physical or virtual, or by Catalyst 9000 switches with Embedded Wireless Controller in SDA mode. It also works with Cisco DNA Center, and can be moved to Meraki cloud management without replacing the hardware.

FAQs

Q: Which controllers manage the CW9166I-Z?
A: It is managed by Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controllers, physical or virtual, or by Catalyst 9000 switches with Embedded Wireless Controller in SDA mode. It requires Cisco IOS XE 17.9.1 or later.

Q: Does this access point need a licence?
A: It needs a Cisco wireless subscription. Options are the Cisco Networking Subscription (Wireless Essentials or Wireless Advantage, minimum 12-month term) or Cisco DNA licensing (DNA Essentials or Advantage, 3, 5 or 7-year terms).

Q: How is the CW9166I-Z powered?
A: It runs from 802.3bt (UPOE), 802.3at (PoE+) or a 54V DC input using the MA-PWR-50WAC supply. 802.3af is for configuration staging only with all radios off. The USB port supplies 4.5 W only on 802.3bt or DC power.

Q: What does the Z in CW9166I-Z mean?
A: The Z suffix identifies the Regulatory Domain Z (Reg-Z) variant of the CW9166I. The hardware is otherwise the same Catalyst 9166I with integrated omnidirectional antennas.

Q: Can this unit be moved to Meraki cloud management?
A: Yes. The Catalyst 9166 series can switch between on-premises management and Meraki cloud management without replacing the hardware. Cloud mode needs a Meraki licence.
