Description

The Cisco 5940 Embedded Services Router is a ruggedised 3U CompactPCI router card from the Cisco 5900 Series Embedded Services Routers. It is built for mobile and embedded networks in harsh environments, including public safety, transportation, defence and energy deployments that need IP routing, encryption and radio-aware routing.

This air-cooled version is supplied as a bundle with the Rear Transition Module (RTM), which gives RJ-45 access to the I/O connectors. It provides four 10/100/1000 routed Gigabit Ethernet ports and one RS-232 console port, with 1 GB DRAM and 256 MB flash. An onboard hardware encryption processor handles IPsec, SSL/TLS, SRTP, 3DES, AES and IKE, offloading crypto work from the router engine. The Advanced Enterprise Cisco IOS Software image (c5940-adventerprisek9-mz) is included with this SKU. The air-cooled card is rated for operation from -18 to 52 C.

The card follows the PICMG 2.0 R3.0 3U CompactPCI standard, so it is intended for integration into standard or custom CPCI enclosures from Cisco partners and systems integrators.

FAQs

Q: Does this router need a separate software licence?
A: No separate subscription is listed. The Advanced Enterprise Cisco IOS Software image (c5940-adventerprisek9-mz) is included with this SKU. The WAAS Express licence is only part of the separate CISCO5940WSEC-A/K9 bundle.

Q: What is the difference between the air-cooled and conduction-cooled models?
A: This SKU is the air-cooled card, rated for -18 to 52 C operation. The conduction-cooled model is CISCO5940-C/K9.

Q: What enclosure does it fit?
A: The card is a 3U, 4HP CompactPCI module built to PICMG 2.0 R3.0, so it suits standard or custom CPCI enclosures. It is powered from the CompactPCI backplane or enclosure.

Q: How do I connect to the Ethernet and console ports?
A: The Rear Transition Module provides the four Gigabit Ethernet ports and the console port via RJ-45 connectors.

Q: Where do I get the IOS image?
A: The Cisco IOS image is downloaded from the Cisco Software Center, which requires a Cisco.com account.
