Description

The Catalyst 8500 is a compact 1RU WAN edge router built for aggregation sites and high-throughput enterprise and service-provider edge deployments. It is built on Cisco's third-generation Quantum Flow Processor and runs Cisco IOS XE in either autonomous mode or Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN controller mode. It suits aggregation-site and WAN-edge routing, high-throughput IPsec and MACsec, cloud and SaaS access, and broadband aggregation (BNG).

This C8500-12X4QC provides 12 x 1/10GE SFP+ ports, 3 x 40GE QSFP+ ports and 2 x 40/100GE QSFP28 ports, with up to 240GE of port bandwidth enabled at once. In autonomous mode it delivers IPv4 forwarding of up to 197 Gbps and IPsec throughput of up to 135 Gbps at 1400 bytes. In SD-WAN mode, IPsec throughput reaches up to 96 Gbps. It ships with 16 GB DRAM, upgradable to 32 GB or 64 GB, and 32 GB eUSB storage, with an optional 480 GB M.2 SATA SSD.

Dual redundant power supplies are fitted by default, with AC and DC options available. Memory, storage, rack kits and a spare fan tray are available as listed accessories. The platform requires Cisco IOS XE 17.3.2 or later and a Cisco DNA Advantage software subscription managed through Smart Licensing.

Q: What licensing does the Catalyst 8500 require?
A: All Catalyst 8500 Series Edge Platforms initially require a Cisco DNA Advantage software subscription, orderable as L-DNA-C8500 and managed through Cisco Smart Licensing.

Q: What power supply options are available?
A: Dual power supplies are fitted by default. The AC option is the PWR-CH1-750WACR (750W, 85-264 VAC) and the DC option is the PWR-CH1-950WDCR (950W, -40 to -72 VDC).

Q: Can the memory and storage be upgraded?
A: Yes. DRAM can be upgraded with MEM-C8500-32GB or MEM-C8500-64GB from the 16 GB default, and storage can be upgraded with the SSD-M2SATA-480G.

Q: Which software release does it need?
A: It requires Cisco IOS XE 17.3.2 or later. Broadband features on the C8500-12X4QC are supported from IOS XE 17.9.3.

Q: Can the QSFP ports be broken out into 10G links?
A: Yes, 4x10GE breakout cables on the QSFP 40G ports allow up to 24 x 10GE ports in total. Breakout is not supported in SD-WAN mode.
