Description

The Catalyst 8300 is a 2RU edge router for branch sites that need WAN routing and integrated voice in one chassis. This voice bundle ships with a NIM-PVDM voice DSP module for DSP-based voice termination and transcoding, and it runs in either SD-WAN controller mode or autonomous mode, so it suits SD-WAN rollouts, secure direct internet access and branch voice or UC deployments.

The chassis provides six embedded Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports (2x SFP and 4x RJ45), plus 2 SM slots, 2 NIM slots and 1 PIM slot for expansion. It comes with 8 GB DRAM (upgradable to 32 GB) and 16 GB M.2 USB storage. SD-WAN IPsec throughput reaches up to 2 Gbps (1400 B), and IPv4 forwarding in autonomous mode reaches up to 19.7 Gbps (1400 B). Dual power supplies are standard, with a 650W AC unit as the default.

The platform needs a Cisco DNA software subscription with a bandwidth tier, managed through Cisco Smart Licensing. Voice modules require the Cisco DNA Advantage tier. It works with the Catalyst 8300 NIM and SM module range, including NIM-PVDM-32, 64, 128 and 256, and requires Cisco IOS XE 17.3.2 or later.

Q: Which licence does this router need?
A: It requires a Cisco DNA software subscription with a bandwidth tier, managed through Cisco Smart Licensing. Voice modules need the Cisco DNA Advantage tier, as the Catalyst Routing Essentials tier does not include voice features.

Q: What power supply does it use?
A: Dual power supplies are standard, with PWR-CC1-650WAC (650 W AC) as the default. Options include PWR-CC1-1000WAC-P (1000 W with a 500 W PoE budget), PWR-CC1-650WDC and PWR-CC1-650WDCR (NEBS). At least one PoE-capable supply is needed to enable PoE on NIM or SM modules.
