Description

The Catalyst 8300 2RU edge router is built for medium and large enterprise branch offices that need strong WAN performance with integrated SD-WAN, multi-layer security and direct internet and cloud access. It also suits sites that rely on voice and UC survivability or LTE and 5G WAN connectivity.

This SKU is the 2RU model with 6 built-in 1-Gigabit Ethernet Layer 3 ports and no 10G ports. It provides two NIM slots, two SM slots and one PIM slot for modular expansion. It ships with 8 GB DRAM, upgradable to 16 GB or 32 GB, and 16 GB of M.2 storage. Cisco rates it at up to 2 Gbps SD-WAN IPsec throughput and up to 19.7 Gbps IPv4 forwarding in autonomous mode, with 6000 SD-WAN overlay tunnels. Dual power supplies support redundancy, with AC, AC PoE, DC and NEBS DC options.

The router supports Cisco NIMs, SMs and PIMs, including Ethernet, LAN and voice modules, and requires Cisco IOS XE 17.3.2 or later. It runs either Cisco IOS XE SD-WAN or autonomous IOS XE, and is managed through Catalyst SD-WAN Manager or Cisco DNA Center.

Q: Does this router need a software licence or subscription?
A: Yes. The Catalyst 8300 is sold with a Cisco DNA Software subscription, Enterprise Agreement or MSLA, managed through Cisco Smart Licensing. The tier (Catalyst Routing Essentials, Cisco DNA Essentials or Cisco DNA Advantage) is selected separately from the hardware.

Q: Which power supplies does the 2RU Catalyst 8300 use?
A: It takes dual power supplies. Options are PWR-CC1-650WAC, PWR-CC1-1000WAC (500 W PoE budget), PWR-CC1-650WDC and PWR-CC1-650WDCR (reversed-airflow DC, NEBS). Powering PoE ports on NIMs or SMs needs at least one PoE-capable PSU.

Q: Which modules work in the NIM and SM slots?
A: Supported Ethernet L3 NIMs include C-NIM-1X, C-NIM-1M and C-NIM-2T. LAN NIMs include C-NIM-4X, C-NIM-8T, C-NIM-8M, NIM-ES2-4 and NIM-ES2-8. Voice modules include NIM-4BRI-NT/TE, SM-X-8FXS/12FXO, SM-X-16FXS/2FXO, SM-X-24FXS/4FXO, SM-X-72FXS, NIM-PVDM-32 and NIM-PVDM-64.

Q: Can the memory and storage be upgraded?
A: Yes. DRAM can be upgraded from 8 GB to 16 GB or 32 GB, and M.2 storage can be upgraded to 32 GB USB or 600 GB and 2 TB NVMe. The 8 GB onboard flash is not upgradable.

Q: How does this model differ from other Catalyst 8300 SKUs?
A: This is the 2RU model with 6 x 1GbE WAN ports and no 10G ports. It provides 2 NIM and 2 SM slots, so it suits sites that do not need 10G WAN connectivity.
