Description

The ASR 9904 is a modular 6RU carrier-class router chassis from the Cisco ASR 9000 Series. It is built for service-provider and enterprise edge and core routing, carrier Ethernet aggregation and high-density 10/40/100GE transport where a compact chassis with strong per-slot bandwidth is needed.

This base SKU is the 2 line card slot chassis. It provides two redundant Route Switch Processors with integrated fabric, up to 4 Tbps of bandwidth per slot and 16 Tbps maximum system capacity. Cooling comes from a single fan tray with 12 variable-speed fans, and the chassis runs Cisco IOS XR. Power modules are ordered separately in either 3 kW AC (200-240V) or 2.1 kW DC (-40 to -72V) form, and AC and DC modules cannot be mixed. AC variants use N+N redundancy and DC variants use N+1. Software functionality is enabled through line card options and feature licences. SD-WAN and LTE do not apply to this platform.

The chassis accepts ASR 9000 RSPs shared with the 9006, 9010, 9906 and 9910, and ASR 9000 line cards including the 4-port, 8-port and 32-port 100GE cards and the fifth-generation multi-rate cards. It uses the A9K-9904-FAN fan tray and ASR-9904-FILTER fan filter, and mounts in 19-inch racks with 21- and 23-inch adapters available.

FAQs

Q: Does the ASR-9904 need a software licence?
A: The chassis itself is ordered without a licence of its own. Software functionality is enabled through line card options and feature licences, so check the licence SKUs for the features you need.

Q: What power does this chassis use?
A: Power modules are ordered separately. Choose a 3 kW AC module (200-240V, 16A max) or a 2.1 kW DC module (-40 to -72V, 60A max). AC and DC modules cannot be mixed in one chassis.

Q: Which line cards and RSPs does it work with?
A: It takes ASR 9000 RSPs, shared with the 9006, 9010, 9906 and 9910, and ASR 9000 line cards including the 4-port, 8-port and 32-port 100GE cards and the fifth-generation multi-rate cards.

Q: How does the base ASR-9904 differ from the AC and DC variants?
A: The base ASR-9904 is the chassis only. ASR-9904-AC and ASR-9904-DC are separate SKUs defined by their power type.

Q: Which fan tray and filter does the ASR 9904 use?
A: It uses the ASR-9904-FAN (A9K-9904-FAN) fan tray, which has 12 variable-speed fans, and the ASR-9904-FILTER fan filter.
