Description

The ASR 9903 is a compact 3RU modular router chassis in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series, built for service-provider and enterprise-edge roles. It suits business PE, metro aggregation, cloud edge, Internet peering, Data Center Interconnect and mobile edge for 4G/5G networks, as well as enterprise border or peering at the edge of the network.

The chassis delivers up to 3.6 Tbps of nonblocking full-duplex capacity. The integrated fixed board provides 16 QSFP28 ports (10/40/100GE) and 20 SFP+ ports (10GE) with up to 1.6 Tbps of bandwidth, and an optional Port Expansion Card slot takes the A9903-20HG-PEC (2T) or A9903-8HG-PEC (800G). The design is fully redundant, with 2 route processors, 2 integrated switch fabrics, 4 hot-swappable 1.6 kW power module slots and 4 fan modules. Airflow is front to back, and depth is 600 mm excluding the ejector. This is the chassis-only part number under the Traditional Business Model, while the Flexible Consumption variant is ASR-9903-FC.

The chassis runs Cisco IOS XR, supported from release 7.1.25. Route processors, port expansion cards, power modules, fan tray and rack kit are ordered separately, and transceivers that apply to the ASR 9903 can be used across all ASR 9000 modular chassis.

FAQs

Q: What power modules does the ASR 9903 use?
A: It accepts up to 4 x PWR-1.6KW-AC or PWR-1.6KW-DC modules, each rated at 1.6 kW. AC and DC modules cannot be mixed in the same chassis.

Q: What power redundancy is available?
A: DC supports 2+2 redundancy. AC supports 2+2 at 200-240V and 3+1 at 90-130V.

Q: What is the difference between ASR-9903 and ASR-9903-FC?
A: ASR-9903 is the chassis-only part number under the Traditional Business Model. ASR-9903-FC is the Flexible Consumption variant, which uses a different licensing approach.

Q: Which software release does it need?
A: The chassis runs Cisco IOS XR and requires release 7.1.25 or later.

Q: Which components are ordered separately for a working system?
A: Route processor A99-RP-F, port expansion cards A9903-20HG-PEC or A9903-8HG-PEC, PWR-1.6KW-AC or DC power modules, the ASR-9903-FAN fan tray, the ASR-9903-4P-KIT rack kit, ASR-9903-CAB-MGMT cable management and the ASR-9903-FILTER air filter.

Q: Can this chassis be upgraded to 400GE?
A: Yes. The QSFP-DD ports on the A9903-20HG-PEC 2T expansion card can be migrated individually to 400GE using the S-A9K-400G-F-ENBL licence.
