Description

The Cisco 8200 Series 8223 is a fixed 3RU router built on Cisco Silicon One, designed for service-provider cores, internet peering and AI data-centre interconnect. Its deep-buffer architecture suits distributed AI networking and DCI links that need to absorb heavy traffic bursts.

This model delivers 51.2 Tbps of system capacity across 64 QSFP-DD800 ports with MACsec encryption on every port. Port speeds are flexible from 10G through to 800G, with breakout options including 2x 400G, 8x 100G, 4x 25G and 4x 10G. It is the IOS XR variant, running Cisco IOS XR under the Flexible Consumption Model, which separates it from the Open version and the OSFP-port siblings in the same family. Inside is an AMD 8-core CPU with 64 GB DRAM and 128 GB SSD, and timing support includes PTP with Class C performance.

It accepts QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP56-DD, QSFP-DD800 and OSFP-800 modules, and is Routed Optical Network ready with support for 400G DCO optics.

Q: Does the 8223-64E-M need a software licence?
A: It runs Cisco IOS XR under the Flexible Consumption Model, which requires Cisco Licensing registration and usage reporting. The software licence, Right-to-Use licences and Software Innovation Access subscription are ordered alongside the system.

Q: How does the 8223-64E-M differ from the 8223-64E-MO?
A: The -M runs Cisco IOS XR. The -MO is the Open variant intended for third-party network operating systems such as SONiC. Both use 64 QSFP-DD800 ports.
