Description

The Catalyst 9164I is an indoor tri-band Wi-Fi 6E access point in the Catalyst 9164 Series. It suits high-density enterprise sites, hybrid-work and all-wireless offices, 4K and 8K video and collaboration traffic, and IoT deployments that use Bluetooth LE or USB application hosting. This CW9164I-Z version is built for Regulatory Domain Z (Australia and New Zealand) and is managed on-premises by a Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controller, physical or virtual, running IOS XE 17.9.1 or later.

The three radios cover 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz radios use 4x4:4 MU-MIMO and the 2.4 GHz radio uses 2x2 MU-MIMO, for a PHY data rate of up to 7.49 Gbps. The 6 GHz band supports channel widths up to 160 MHz. Backhaul is a single 100M/1000M/2.5G Multigigabit Ethernet RJ-45 port, alongside an RJ-45 management console port and a USB 2.0 port rated at 4.5 W. It can be powered by 802.3bt (UPOE), 802.3at (PoE+) or a 54V DC input, with a maximum draw of 30 W on UPOE or DC and 25 W on PoE+.

The unit has internal omnidirectional antennas and Bluetooth 5.1 LE. It needs a Cisco wireless subscription licence to operate, under either the Cisco Networking Subscription or Cisco DNA licensing.

FAQs

Q: Does this access point need a licence?
A: Yes. It needs a Cisco wireless subscription licence to operate, either through the Cisco Networking Subscription (Wireless Essentials or Wireless Advantage) or Cisco DNA licensing (Essentials or Advantage). Check your quote or bundle for the tier.

Q: What controller manages the CW9164I-Z?
A: It is managed by a Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controller, physical or virtual, running IOS XE 17.9.1 or later. The Meraki cloud-managed version is the CW9164I-MR.

Q: How is it powered?
A: It accepts 802.3bt (UPOE), 802.3at (PoE+) or a 54V DC input. It draws up to 30 W on UPOE or DC and up to 25 W on PoE+, where USB is not supported. Cisco power injectors AIR-PWRINJ7=, AIR-PWRINJ6= and MA-INJ-6 are listed for it.

Q: Can it run on a basic 802.3af PoE port?
A: 802.3af is only suitable for configuration staging. At 14 W it runs at 1G with all radios off. For normal operation use 802.3at, 802.3bt or DC power.

Q: What does the Z suffix mean?
A: The Z suffix is the regulatory domain for Australia and New Zealand. Other CW9164I part numbers are built for other regulatory domains.
