Description

The Cisco VG420 is a 2RU, 19-inch rack-mount analog voice gateway running Cisco IOS-XE. It connects analog phones, fax machines and modems to Cisco Unified Communications Manager, or to CUCME via an ISR. It suits centralised, high-density deployments where an organisation wants to adopt IP telephony with Cisco UCM or Webex Calling while keeping its existing analog devices and wiring.

This VG420-84FXS/6FXO variant provides 84 FXS ports, all FXS-E enabled, plus 6 built-in FXO failover bypass ports that let designated analog phones reach the PSTN if the chassis loses power. Two NIM slots accept analog and digital voice modules, and two 10/100/1000 RJ45 Ethernet LAN ports provide link redundancy. An Intel x86 multicore processor with 4 GB DDR4 DRAM and 8 GB fixed flash runs the platform. Power is 100-240 VAC auto-ranging, with an optional integrated redundant power supply. Licensing is Smart Licensing only, with the Unified Communication licence included by default.

The gateway runs Cisco IOS-XE 17.6.1 or later and works with Cisco UCM 14.0 (SU1) and 12.5 (SU4), as well as third-party call control over a SIP trunk. It supports the existing Cisco analog and digital voice NIMs, including FXO, FXS, E/M, BRI and T1/E1. CUBE, CUCME, SRST and DSP farm functions are not native to the VG420 and require an ISR 4000 or Catalyst 8200/8300.

FAQs

Q: How is the VG420 licensed?
A: It uses Smart Licensing only, and a Smart Account and Virtual Account are required when ordering. The Unified Communication licence is included by default. The Security licence is optional, and the Cloud Calling licence for Webex Calling is optional and requires the Security licence to be installed first.

Q: What call control platforms does it work with?
A: It works with Cisco Unified Communications Manager 14.0 (SU1) and 12.5 (SU4), and with Cisco UCME via an ISR. Third-party call control is supported over a SIP trunk.

Q: What power supply options are available?
A: The gateway takes 100-240 VAC auto-ranging input. Power supply options are the PWR-VG420-650WAC (650 W AC) and PWR-VG420-650WDC (650 W DC), and an optional integrated redundant power supply is available.

Q: Which NIMs can be fitted in the two NIM slots?
A: It supports NIM-2FXO, NIM-4FXO, NIM-2FXSP, NIM-4FXSP, NIM-2FXS/4FXOP, NIM-4E/M, the BRI NIMs and the T1/E1 multiflex trunk NIMs. A VG420-NIM-BLANK cover is available for unused slots.

Q: Does it support CUBE, SRST or CUCME locally?
A: No. The VG420 does not natively support CUBE, CUCME, SRST or DSP farm functions. These require an ISR 4000 or Catalyst 8200/8300 platform.
