Description

The Cisco VG420 is a 2RU, 19-inch rack-mount analog voice gateway running IOS-XE. It connects analog phones, fax machines and modems to Cisco Unified Communications Manager or Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express, so existing analog devices keep working on an IP telephony system. It suits centralised or highly concentrated deployments such as large enterprise, campus or hotel voice migrations, and can be paired with Webex Calling when the Cloud Calling licence is added.

This VG420-144FXS variant provides 144 FXS ports with 0 FXO, 108 of them FXS-E enabled, delivered through 6 RJ21 connectors. Two 10/100/1000 RJ45 Ethernet LAN ports and two NIM slots for analog and digital voice modules add flexibility. The gateway supports SCCP, MGCP, SIP, RTP and SRTP, along with T.38 fax relay, modem pass-through and the G.711, G.726, G.729A, G.729AB and G.722 codecs. It is built on an Intel x86 multicore processor with 4 GB DDR4 DRAM and 8 GB of flash.

Power is 100-240 VAC auto-ranging, with an optional second hot-swappable PSU for redundancy. Licensing is Smart Licensing only, with the Unified Communication licence (UCK9) included by default. Security (SECK9) and Cloud Calling (FL-VG4XX-CC) licences are optional. The gateway requires Cisco IOS-XE 17.6.1 or later and works with Cisco Unified Communications Manager 14.0 (SU1) and 12.5 (SU4), or third-party call control via SIP trunk.

Q: Does the VG420-144FXS need a licence?
A: It uses Smart Licensing only, and a Smart Account or Virtual Account is required when ordering. The Unified Communication licence (UCK9) is included by default. The Security licence (SECK9) is optional.

Q: Can it be used with Webex Calling?
A: Yes, with the optional Cloud Calling licence (FL-VG4XX-CC). It requires the SECK9 Security licence to be installed first.

Q: Which call control platforms does it work with?
A: It works with Cisco Unified Communications Manager 14.0 (SU1) and 12.5 (SU4), Cisco UCME versions compatible with IOS-XE 17.6.1 or higher, and third-party call control via SIP trunk.

Q: What power supplies does it use?
A: It runs from 100-240 VAC and supports one or two hot-swappable PSUs: PWR-VG420-650WAC / WAC2 (650W AC) or PWR-VG420-650WDC / WDC2 (650W DC). A second PSU provides redundancy.

Q: Which NIM modules can be fitted?
A: It has two NIM slots supporting modules such as NIM-2FXO, NIM-4FXO, NIM-2FXSP, NIM-4FXSP, NIM-2FXS/4FXOP, NIM-4E/M, NIM-2BRI-NT/TE, NIM-4BRI-NT/TE and the NIM-xMFT-T1/E1 range.

Q: Does it support CUBE, SRST or DSP farms?
A: No. It does not natively support CUBE, UCME or SRST, and it has no DSP farm capability.
