FAQs

Q: What is the flex radio feature on the CW9172I?
A: The CW9172I features a software-defined flex radio that can operate in either tri-band mode (2.4/5/6 GHz at 2x2:2 each) or dual-band mode (2.4 GHz at 2x2:2 and 5 GHz at 4x4:4). This allows you to switch to high-performance dual-band operation in regions where 6 GHz is not yet approved or when you need stronger 5 GHz performance for higher client density.

Q: Can this access point be managed with both Meraki and Catalyst controllers?
A: Yes, the CW9172I is a unified platform that supports both cloud management via Meraki Dashboard and on-premises management via Cisco Catalyst 9800 Wireless LAN Controllers. Organizations can deploy in cloud, on-premises, or hybrid configurations without replacing hardware, providing architectural flexibility and investment protection.

Q: What PoE standard is required for full functionality?
A: The CW9172I requires 802.3at (PoE+) delivering up to 30W for full operation of all radios and features. It can operate with 802.3af power, but with reduced functionality (only 2.4 GHz radio at 1x1). For maximum performance including USB power and the 4x4 flex radio mode, 802.3bt Class 5 delivering up to 32W is recommended.

Q: Does the CW9172I include IoT and Bluetooth capabilities?
A: Yes, the CW9172I includes a dedicated fifth radio supporting Bluetooth 5.3 / BLE for seamless deployment of beaconing, device scanning, and location-aware applications. It also supports 802.15.4 for IoT use cases, enabling asset tracking, environmental monitoring, and smart building applications without impacting wireless client performance.

Q: Is a Meraki subscription license required to use this access point?
A: Yes, when deploying the CW9172I in Meraki management mode, an active Meraki MR subscription license is required for cloud management, firmware updates, and access to the Meraki Dashboard. When deployed in Catalyst mode with a 9800 controller, standard Cisco licensing applies instead.
