Description

The CW9800L-MCG is the smaller of the two Cisco Campus Gateway models. It is a cloud-native wireless controller managed through the Meraki dashboard, built for campus networks that need seamless roaming at scale. It suits large campuses, organisations moving from on-premises controllers to cloud-managed wireless, and designs that use DMZ guest tunnelling, multi-site roaming or disaster recovery.

Through a standalone appliance it provides up to 10 Gbps of throughput, rising to 20 Gbps in a cluster of two. Data connectivity is 2 x 1/10 Gbps SFP+ ports, with a 1 Gbps RJ-45 redundancy port for clustering and an RJ-45 service port. Scale is up to 1,000 access points and 10,000 clients on current software, with 500 access points on releases before 32.2.3. Power comes from a single 12V DC, 110 W external AC adapter, with optional redundant power through the CW9800L-RPS=. The CW9800H1-MCG is the larger model, with 100 Gbps and 12,000 access point scale.

It works with Meraki MR and CW series access points, including Wi-Fi 6 models (MR36, MR36H, MR44, MR46, MR46E, MR56, MR76, MR78, MR86), Wi-Fi 6E models (MR57, CW9162, CW9163, CW9164, CW9166) and all Wi-Fi 7 models. Release MR32.2 or later is required on both the gateway and the access points.

Q: Does the Campus Gateway need a licence?
A: The gateway itself needs no device licence. The access points it supports need a Meraki Enterprise or Advanced tier cloud licence, while Wi-Fi 7 access points need a Cisco Networking subscription at Essentials or Advantage tier.

Q: Which access points does it support?
A: It supports Wi-Fi 6 models MR36, MR36H, MR44, MR46, MR46E, MR56, MR76, MR78 and MR86, Wi-Fi 6E models MR57, CW9162, CW9163, CW9164 and CW9166, and all Wi-Fi 7 models.

Q: How does it differ from the CW9800H1-MCG?
A: The CW9800L-MCG provides up to 10 Gbps with 2 x 1/10G SFP+ ports and up to 1,000 APs. The CW9800H1-MCG provides 100 Gbps with 4 x 25G SFP28 and 8 x 10G SFP+ ports and scales to 12,000 APs.

Q: Which optics and cables can be used on the SFP+ ports?
A: Supported modules include GLC-TE, GLC-LH-SMD, GLC-SX-MMD, the SFP-10G-SR and SFP-10G-LR families, Finisar SR and LR optics, and 10G DAC and AOC cables from 1 m to 10 m. Use at least two uplink ports of the same speed and type to the upstream switch.

Q: Can it be run as a redundant pair?
A: Yes. One or two Campus Gateway appliances can form a cluster using the 1 Gbps RJ-45 redundancy port, giving high availability and up to 20 Gbps of clustered throughput.

Q: Can I claim it on my Meraki dashboard?
A: Yes. Every Meraki device XS Network Tech supplies can be claimed on your Meraki dashboard.
