Description

The Cisco Wireless 9178I is an indoor Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) access point with internal antennas, built for high-density enterprise environments and latency-sensitive applications such as AR/VR, 4K/8K video and collaboration. The CW9178I-RTG is the global-use variant, so one SKU can be deployed across regions and managed on-premises through Catalyst 9800 controllers or from the Meraki cloud.

It runs 4x4 MU-MIMO radios across the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands, with channel widths up to 320 MHz on 6 GHz. The default tri-radio mode delivers PHY rates up to 18 Gbps, while the optional quad-radio mode uses Flexible Radio Assignment to run dual 4x4 5 GHz radios for up to 24 Gbps. Two Multigigabit Ethernet ports (100M to 10G, RJ-45) provide uplink and redundancy. An integrated Ultra-Wideband radio, BLE 5.3 radio and built-in GNSS/GPS support asset tracking, wayfinding and indoor navigation.

Full 4x4 operation requires 802.3bt UPOE, drawing up to 47 W. On 802.3at PoE+ the access point runs in reduced mode, and the Cisco CW-INJ-8 power injector is also supported. A Cisco Networking Subscription for wireless (Essentials or Advantage) is required.

FAQs

Q: Does the CW9178I-RTG need a licence?
A: Yes. It requires a Cisco Networking Subscription for wireless, either Essentials or Advantage.

Q: How do I power it for full 4x4 operation?
A: Use 802.3bt UPOE (Class 6), which draws up to 47 W, or the Cisco CW-INJ-8 power injector. On 802.3at PoE+ it runs in reduced mode, and 802.3af is for staging only with radios off.

Q: Which controllers does it work with?
A: On-premises, it works with Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controllers (physical or virtual), or Catalyst 9000 switches with Embedded Wireless Controller in SD-Access mode, running IOS XE 17.15.2 or later. It can also be managed from the Meraki dashboard.

Q: What does the -RTG suffix mean?
A: RTG is the global-use variant. It selects the regulatory domain automatically, so no region-specific SKU is needed.

Q: What cabling do the 10G Multigigabit ports need?
A: Cat6 or Cat6A cabling is needed for 10 Gbps. Cat5e supports speeds up to 5 Gbps.
