Description

The Catalyst 9166D1 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E indoor access point with an integrated directional antenna, built for high-ceiling open spaces such as auditoriums and warehouses where external antennas would normally be needed. It belongs to the Catalyst 9166 Series and is also suited to mission-critical, high-density enterprise Wi-Fi 6E deployments.

Three 4x4:4 radios cover the 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz bands, with a dual-band XOR radio that shifts capacity between 6 GHz and a secondary 5 GHz radio. PHY data rates reach 7.78 Gbps on 6 GHz with 160 MHz channels. The directional antennas provide 6 dBi on 2.4 GHz, 6 dBi on 5 GHz and 8 dBi on the 5 GHz XOR and 6 GHz radios. A single 100M/1G/2.5G/5G Multigigabit Ethernet port carries data and power, using 802.3bt (UPOE) or 802.3at (PoE+), with a DC input also supported. This SKU is the ROW regulatory domain version, running in Catalyst (on-premises) mode. Licences are ordered separately, either through the Cisco Networking Subscription or Cisco DNA Essentials or Advantage.

The access point requires Cisco IOS XE 17.12.1 or later and is managed by a Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controller, physical or virtual, or by Catalyst 9000 switches running Embedded Wireless Controller in SD-Access mode. Cisco Spaces, ISE and DNA Center are supported.

FAQs

Q: What does this access point need to be managed?
A: It needs Cisco IOS XE 17.12.1 or later and is managed by a Catalyst 9800 Series Wireless Controller, physical or virtual. Catalyst 9000 switches running Embedded Wireless Controller in SD-Access mode also work.

Q: Does it need a licence?
A: Yes. Licensing is ordered separately, either as Cisco Networking Subscription (Wireless Essentials or Advantage) or Cisco DNA Essentials or Advantage, and managed through a Smart Account.

Q: How is it powered?
A: It runs from 802.3bt (UPOE), 802.3at (PoE+) or a 54V DC input. Maximum draw is 30.5 W on 802.3bt and 25.5 W on 802.3at. Cisco injectors AIR-PWRINJ6=, AIR-PWRINJ7= and MA-INJ-6 are listed for use with it.

Q: Which mounting options does it work with?
A: The AIR-AP-Bracket-2 bracket and the CW-MNT-ART2-00 articulating arm are the mounting options listed for this access point.

Q: How does the CW9166D1-ROW differ from its sibling SKUs?
A: The -ROW suffix is the Rest of World regulatory domain, and this version runs in Catalyst (on-premises) mode. The Meraki cloud-managed version is the -MR SKU.
