Q: Which Cisco platforms support this transceiver?
A: Any Cisco switch, router, or appliance with a Gigabit Ethernet SFP slot that supports 1000BASE-T copper transceivers will accept this module. This includes Catalyst, Nexus, ASR, ISR, and Firepower series devices with SFP ports that list the GLC-TE in their compatibility matrix.

Q: Does this module require Category 5e or will Category 5 cabling work?
A: IEEE 802.3ab specifies operation over Category 5 cabling, but in practice Category 5e or Category 6 is recommended for full margin and reliable gigabit operation. Post-1995 Category 5 installations may support 1000BASE-T, but should be tested for NEXT, FEXT, and return loss before deployment.

Q: How does auto-negotiation affect link establishment with 10/100 Mbps devices?
A: The module exchanges link pulses with the remote device to determine the highest common speed and duplex mode. If connected to a 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX port, it will downshift to that rate. Auto-negotiation is mandatory for 1000BASE-T per the standard, so both ends must support it for gigabit operation.

Q: Can I use this transceiver in a PoE-enabled port without damaging the module?
A: Yes. The module is transparent to Power over Ethernet. PoE power negotiation and delivery occur between the Ethernet switch and the powered device at the far end of the copper link. The transceiver itself does not consume or pass PoE power and is unaffected by IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt operation on the port.
