Description

The Cisco QSFP-400G-FR4 is a 400 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver designed for data center and enterprise deployments over single-mode fiber. Using four 100G PAM4 CWDM wavelengths multiplexed onto a duplex LC fiber pair, it delivers 400G connectivity up to 2 kilometers while simplifying fiber infrastructure compared to parallel optics. Compliant with IEEE 400GBASE-FR4 standards, this hot-pluggable module is ideal for spine-leaf architectures, high-performance computing, and AI networking fabrics.

Features

IEEE 802.3bs 400GBASE-FR4 compliant for standards-based interoperability
- Four 100G PAM4 optical lanes multiplexed via CWDM technology
- Duplex LC connector reduces fiber complexity versus parallel optics
- Hot-pluggable QSFP112 form factor for easy installation without downtime
- Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) for real-time performance tracking
- Low-power operation suitable for high-density deployments
- Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) on all electrical lanes
- RoHS compliant and Class 1 laser safety certified
- Optimized for AI/ML fabrics, cloud networking, and data center spine-leaf architectures
- Supports migration from existing duplex single-mode fiber infrastructure
- Commercial temperature range (0°C to 70°C) operation
- Single 3.3V power supply requirement

FAQs

Q: What is the maximum transmission distance for the QSFP-400G-FR4?
A: The QSFP-400G-FR4 supports link lengths up to 2 kilometers over standard G.652 single-mode fiber with duplex LC connectors, making it suitable for intra-data center and campus interconnects.

Q: What wavelengths does this transceiver use?
A: The module uses four CWDM wavelengths at 1271, 1291, 1311, and 1331 nm, each carrying 100G PAM4 signals multiplexed onto a single duplex fiber pair for efficient 400G transmission.

Q: Is Forward Error Correction (FEC) required?
A: Yes, KP4 RS-FEC (RS(544,514)) is required for 400G operation and is typically handled by the host switch ASIC. Ensure your platform supports and enables KP4 FEC on QSFP-DD interfaces.

Q: What platforms support the QSFP-400G-FR4?
A: This module is compatible with Cisco platforms including Nexus 9300-GX2, Nexus 9500-EX/FX3, Catalyst 9500X, Cisco 8000 series, and other QSFP112/QSFP-DD compliant ports. Verify compatibility with your specific hardware and software version.

Q: How does FR4 compare to DR4 for fiber usage?
A: FR4 uses a duplex LC connector (2 fibers) with wavelength multiplexing, while DR4 uses an MPO-12 connector (8 active fibers). FR4 reduces fiber count and simplifies migration from existing duplex fiber infrastructure.
