Description

The Nexus 5600 12-port 40G QSFP+ expansion module adds twelve native 40 Gigabit Ethernet and FCoE ports to a Cisco Nexus 5624Q or 5648Q switch. It suits data centre top-of-rack, aggregation and leaf/spine designs where 40G port density or extra uplink capacity is needed, as well as converged Ethernet and FCoE I/O consolidation.

It is a hot-swappable generic expansion module (GEM) with online insertion and removal. The Nexus 5624Q has one GEM bay, giving up to 24 x 40G ports in total, and the Nexus 5648Q has two GEM bays, giving up to 48 x 40G ports in total. Each QSFP+ port can also run as 4 x 10GbE using breakout cables, and the host platform offers line-rate Layer 2 and Layer 3 forwarding with approximately 1 microsecond cut-through latency.

The module is supported in the Nexus 5624Q and 5648Q chassis only, and it is not for the 5696Q. It draws power from the host chassis and needs no licence of its own, although host switch features depend on the Nexus 5600 software licences.

FAQs

Q: Which switches is the N5600-M12Q compatible with?
A: It is supported in the Cisco Nexus 5624Q and Nexus 5648Q chassis only. It is not for the Nexus 5696Q, which uses the N5696-M12Q module.

Q: Does this module need its own licence?
A: No. The module itself needs no licence. Features on the host switch depend on the Nexus 5600 software licences, such as N56-BAS1K9 for Layer 3 Base.

Q: How is the module powered?
A: It draws power from the host chassis and has no separate power input. The Nexus 5624Q uses up to 2 x 1100 W power supplies, and the Nexus 5648Q uses up to 4 x 1100 W power supplies.

Q: Can the 40G ports be used for 10G connections?
A: Yes. Each QSFP+ port can run as 4 x 10GbE using QSFP breakout cables. A QSFP-to-SFP/SFP+ adapter (QSA) allows 1GbE or 10GbE connectivity on the platform.

Q: How many 40G ports will I have with this module installed?
A: A Nexus 5624Q with one module has 24 x 40G ports in total. A Nexus 5648Q with two modules has 48 x 40G ports in total.
