The Cisco C-SM-40T8M2X is a double-wide switching module for Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge Platforms. It adds integrated branch LAN switching to the router, helping consolidate LAN and WAN services into a single platform.

This module provides 50 total ports, including 40 x 1G RJ45 ports, 8 x 2.5G Multigigabit RJ45 ports, and 2 x 10G SFP+ uplinks. The SFP+ uplink ports support either 1G SFP or 10G SFP+ operation, giving flexibility for fibre uplinks, aggregation, or server connectivity.

Based on Cisco naming and channel listings, the C-SM-40T8M2X is the non-PoE version of the 40-port double-wide switching module. It is well suited to branch deployments that need dense copper access and multigigabit capability, but do not require PoE power delivery.

The Catalyst 8000 SM-based switching architecture supports enterprise-class branch features including Layer 2 switching, VLANs, EtherChannel, LACP, PAgP, 802.1X device authentication, Cisco TrustSec, and 128-bit MACsec. It also uses the host Catalyst 8300 platform and integrates with Cisco IOS XE for simplified management through a single platform.

Cisco C-SM-16T4M2X is a Catalyst Edge Switch Service Module (SM) designed for Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge Platforms, adding integrated branch switching with a mix of 1GbE, 2.5GbE Multigigabit and 10GbE uplinks.

Cisco C-SM-16P4M2X is a Catalyst 8000 SM-based Layer 2 switching module built for Cisco Catalyst 8300 Series Edge Platforms. It adds integrated branch switching with Multigigabit access ports, PoE, and 10G fibre uplinks, all managed under the same IOS XE software base as the host platform.
