FAQs

Q: What GPUs does the DL380a Gen11 support?
A: The DL380a Gen11 supports up to 4 double-wide or 8 single-wide NVIDIA GPUs including H100, L40, A100, A16, and L4 models. The server features dedicated GPU power domains and enhanced airflow optimized for dense GPU configurations. NVLink bridges can be used to connect adjacent GPUs for enhanced performance.

Q: How does the DL380a differ from the standard DL380 Gen11?
A: The DL380a is optimized for GPU acceleration with enhanced cooling (6 dual-rotor fans), support for up to 8 GPUs, and dedicated GPU power domains. It has 24 DIMM slots (vs 32 on standard DL380), fewer storage expansion options, and a streamlined I/O configuration focused on GPU workloads rather than general-purpose applications.

Q: Can I mix 4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon processors?
A: No, mixing processor generations is not supported. Both sockets must use identical processor models from the same generation. Additionally, 5th Gen Intel Xeon processors require a system board with updated firmware that is not compatible with 4th Gen CPU system boards.

Q: What workloads is the DL380a Gen11 designed for?
A: The DL380a Gen11 is purpose-built for AI inference, machine learning, deep learning training, GPU-accelerated analytics, HPC simulations, and graphics-intensive applications such as rendering and VDI. The high GPU density and PCIe Gen5 I/O make it ideal for entry to mid-level AI deployments.

Q: Does the DL380a Gen11 require special power supply configuration?
A: Yes, the DL380a Gen11 features three independent power domains including two dedicated GPU domains. A minimum of 4 power supplies is required for full GPU configurations, with 2 supplies per GPU power domain. HPE recommends using the Power Advisor tool to size power supplies correctly based on your GPU and CPU configuration.
