FAQs

Q: What is the difference between PoE+ and UPOE on this switch?
A: Standard PoE+ delivers up to 30W per port per IEEE 802.3at, while Cisco UPOE provides up to 60W per port, enabling support for high-power devices such as wireless access points, video endpoints, thin clients, and IP phones with advanced features.

Q: Can I use this switch for wireless network management?
A: Yes, the WS-C3850-24UW-S includes built-in wireless controller functionality and ships with 5 access point licenses. It can manage wireless access points directly, providing converged wired and wireless access in a single platform with unified policy enforcement.

Q: What uplink modules are compatible with this switch?
A: The switch supports C3850-NM-4-1G (4x 1G SFP) and C3850-NM-2-10G (4x 1G SFP / 2x 10G SFP+) network modules. Note that modules are sold separately and must be purchased based on your uplink requirements.

Q: How many switches can be stacked together?
A: Up to 9 Catalyst 3850 switches can be stacked together using StackWise-480 technology, providing 480 Gbps of stack throughput and managed as a single logical unit with a single management IP address.

Q: What routing capabilities does the IP Base license provide?
A: IP Base includes comprehensive Layer 2 switching features and limited Layer 3 routing capabilities including static routing, OSPF stub, EIGRP stub, and RIPv1/v2. For full Layer 3 features including full OSPF and BGP, an upgrade to IP Services license is required.
