Description

The Cisco WS-C3650-12X48UZ-S is a Layer 3 stackable switch designed for enterprise campus deployments requiring high-density UPOE power delivery and multigigabit performance. It features 36 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 12 multigigabit ports supporting 100M/1G/2.5G/5G/10G speeds, and two 40G QSFP+ uplinks. With 660W total PoE budget and 60W per-port UPOE capability, it efficiently powers bandwidth-intensive devices like 802.11ac Wave 2 access points, IP cameras, and collaboration endpoints. The IP Base license provides Layer 3 routing with static routes, RIP, EIGRP stub, and limited OSPF support.

Features

Cisco UPOE: Up to 60W per port for powering high-performance devices such as PTZ cameras and 802.11ac/Wi-Fi 6 access points
- Multigigabit Ethernet: 12 ports support IEEE 802.3bz (2.5GBASE-T, 5GBASE-T, 10GBASE-T) over Cat 5e/6 cabling
- StackWise-160 Technology: Optional stacking with 160 Gbps bandwidth, up to 9 switches, stateful switchover (SSO) for high availability
- Layer 3 Routing: IP Base license includes static routing, RIP, EIGRP stub, OSPF (routed access), IPv4/IPv6 support, and multicast routing (up to 1000 routes)
- Unified Access Data Plane (UADP) ASIC: Enables wired-wireless convergence, policy enforcement, and application visibility
- Modular Redundancy: Dual hot-swappable power supplies and modular fans for continuous uptime
- Quality of Service (QoS): 8 egress queues per port, advanced policing, shaping, and classification for voice/video prioritization
- Security Features: 802.1X authentication, MACsec encryption, TrustSec, Secure Boot, dynamic ARP inspection, DHCP snooping, and port security
- Flexible NetFlow (FNF) Version 9: Provides detailed visibility into network traffic and application performance
- High Availability: Cross-stack EtherChannel, FlexLink, RSTP, MSTP, PVRST+ for resilient network topologies
- Wireless Controller Integration: Can manage Cisco Aironet access points (up to 25 APs and 1,000 clients per switch/stack with IP Base)
- Energy Efficiency: Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) support to reduce power consumption during low-traffic periods
- Cisco IOS XE Software: Modular, Linux-based OS with support for automation, telemetry, RESTCONF, and NETCONF APIs

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between the -S and -L SKUs on the Catalyst 3650?
A: The WS-C3650-12X48UZ-S ships with IP Base license, providing Layer 3 routing with static routes, RIP, EIGRP stub, and limited OSPF. The -L variant includes LAN Base license with only Layer 2+ features and limited routing. The -E variant includes IP Services for full Layer 3 routing (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP).

Q: Can this switch power Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11ac Wave 2 access points?
A: Yes. With Cisco UPOE delivering up to 60W per port and a 660W total PoE budget, the WS-C3650-12X48UZ-S can power high-performance access points including Cisco Aironet 3800, 4800, and other UPOE-compatible devices requiring more than standard PoE+ (30W).

Q: Does the switch support stacking, and how many units can be stacked?
A: Yes, the WS-C3650-12X48UZ-S supports optional Cisco StackWise-160 technology. Up to 9 switches can be stacked with 160 Gbps of stack bandwidth, providing a single management interface, redundancy, and simplified scalability.

Q: What are the multigigabit ports used for?
A: The 12 multigigabit ports (100M/1G/2.5G/5G/10G) support IEEE 802.3bz and are ideal for connecting high-bandwidth devices such as 802.11ac Wave 2 or Wi-Fi 6 access points over existing Cat 5e/Cat 6 cabling, eliminating the need for costly cable upgrades.

Q: Is a second power supply required for full PoE capability?
A: The switch includes one 1100W AC PSU and supports a second redundant PSU (sold separately). With a single 1100W PSU, the switch delivers 660W PoE budget. A second PSU provides power redundancy but does not increase the total PoE budget beyond 660W unless using dual 1100W units for combined PoE availability.
