Description

The Cisco SFP-50G-BX40D-I is a 50GBASE-BR40 bidirectional SFP56 transceiver designed for long-reach single-fiber deployments in harsh environments. Supporting 40km transmission over single-mode fiber, this industrial-temperature-rated module transmits at 1330nm and receives at 1270nm, enabling cost-efficient connectivity for data centers, 5G transport networks, and IoT applications. The module also supports dual-rate operation at 25Gbps and includes CPRI option 10 for fronthaul applications.

Features

50GBASE-BR40 and 25GBASE-BR40 dual-rate operation for flexible bandwidth scaling
- Single-fiber bidirectional transmission using WDM technology to maximize fiber utilization
- 40km reach over standard single-mode fiber (G.652) for long-haul connectivity
- Industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) for deployment in harsh environments
- Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM) for real-time performance monitoring and troubleshooting
- Hot-swappable SFP56 form factor for easy installation and replacement without downtime
- Low power consumption for energy-efficient high-density deployments
- CPRI option 10 support for 5G fronthaul and mobile network applications
- Forward Error Correction (FEC) support: KP1-FEC for 50G, KR1-FEC for 25G

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between the SFP-50G-BX40D-I and SFP-50G-BX40U-I?
A: The SFP-50G-BX40D-I is the downstream transceiver that transmits at 1330nm and receives at 1270nm, while the SFP-50G-BX40U-I is the upstream counterpart transmitting at 1270nm and receiving at 1330nm. These modules must be used as a matched pair on opposite ends of a single fiber strand to enable bidirectional communication over 40km.

Q: What is the industrial temperature rating and why is it important?
A: The industrial temperature rating (-40°C to +85°C) allows this transceiver to operate reliably in harsh, non-temperature-controlled environments such as outdoor cabinets, utility substations, factory floors, and mobile network base stations. This extended range ensures consistent performance in extreme conditions where commercial-rated optics would fail.

Q: Does this transceiver support both 50G and 25G data rates?
A: Yes, the SFP-50G-BX40D-I is a dual-rate module supporting both 50Gbps and 25Gbps operation over the same 40km single-mode fiber link. This flexibility enables network operators to scale bandwidth as needed while maintaining compatibility with existing fiber infrastructure. FEC requirements differ between modes: KP1-FEC for 50G and KR1-FEC for 25G.

Q: Can I use this transceiver with standard duplex fiber infrastructure?
A: No, this is a bidirectional (BiDi) transceiver designed specifically for single-fiber operation using a simplex LC connector. It uses wavelength division multiplexing to transmit and receive on the same fiber strand, effectively doubling fiber utilization. It cannot be used with standard duplex transceivers or dual-fiber cabling.

Q: What platforms and switches support this transceiver?
A: This transceiver is designed for Cisco switches and routers with SFP56 ports. Compatibility depends on the specific platform and software version. Consult the Cisco Transceiver Module Group (TMG) Compatibility Matrix to verify support for your specific hardware model and IOS/NX-OS release.
