Description

The Cisco C9400-SUP-1XL-Y-2 is a redundant supervisor engine designed for enterprise-class core and aggregation deployments in Catalyst 9400 modular switches. Supporting up to 240 Gbps per slot with 25G uplink capability, this next-generation supervisor provides high availability with dual supervisor redundancy, advanced routing services, and is optimized for high-density PoE+ and UPOE+ environments requiring mission-critical uptime.

Features

Dual supervisor redundancy with Stateful Switchover (SSO) and Nonstop Forwarding (NSF) for zero-downtime failover
- Flexible uplink connectivity: software-selectable 2x 25G SFP28, 8x 10G SFP+, or 2x 40G QSFP+ configurations
- Advanced Layer 3 routing: OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, MPLS, LISP, VRF-aware forwarding
- SD-Access ready: integrated support for Cisco DNA Center, fabric edge/border roles, and VXLAN-EVPN
- Cisco StackWise Virtual: dual-chassis virtualization for up to 800 ports in a single logical switch
- Hardware-based Flexible NetFlow (FNF) supporting up to 384,000 flows for telemetry and visibility
- Cisco UPOE+ (90W) and UPOE (60W) support for high-power IoT devices, Wi-Fi 6/6E APs, and building automation
- Programmable UADP 2.0 ASIC with flexible SDM templates for optimized ACL, QoS, and routing table allocation
- In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) for hitless software updates with dual supervisors
- On-box application hosting: 960GB SSD storage for container-based analytics and third-party applications
- Cisco TrustSec and SGT-based segmentation for micro-segmentation and zero-trust architectures
- Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA): ML-based threat detection in encrypted flows without decryption
- IPv4 and IPv6 wire-rate forwarding with extensive multicast support (PIM, IGMP v3, MLD)
- Comprehensive QoS with 8 egress queues, WRED, policing, and shaping for voice, video, and data prioritization

FAQs

Q: What does the '-2' suffix indicate in C9400-SUP-1XL-Y-2?
A: The '-2' suffix designates this as the second (redundant/standby) supervisor module for high availability deployments. The primary supervisor is ordered as C9400-SUP-1XL-Y, while the redundant unit is C9400-SUP-1XL-Y-2. Both are required for full N+1 redundancy.

Q: How does the SUP-1XL-Y differ from the standard SUP-1XL?
A: The SUP-1XL-Y adds native 25G uplink support via 2x SFP28 ports, enabling cost-effective migration from 10G to 25G in core/aggregation layers. It also supports up to 240 Gbps per slot in C9404R chassis and enhanced UPOE+ (90W per port) capabilities for high-power IoT and Wi-Fi 6/6E deployments.

Q: Can I mix SUP-1XL and SUP-1XL-Y in the same chassis?
A: While both supervisors are compatible with the same line cards, Cisco recommends using matching supervisor models (both SUP-1XL or both SUP-1XL-Y) in redundant configurations to ensure consistent feature sets, bandwidth allocation, and seamless failover behavior.

Q: Does the C9400-SUP-1XL-Y support MACsec encryption?
A: MACsec-256 encryption is supported on line card ports but is currently not supported in hardware on the supervisor's uplink ports. Access-layer MACsec is fully supported at line rate for securing campus traffic.

Q: What deployment scenarios benefit most from the SUP-1XL-Y?
A: The SUP-1XL-Y is ideal for mid-to-large campus aggregation and distribution layers requiring 25G uplinks to the core, high-density PoE+ or UPOE+ for Wi-Fi 6E access points, IP cameras, and digital building applications, and mission-critical uptime with dual supervisor redundancy.
