FAQs

Q: What is the difference between VSR4 and SR4 optical standards?
A: The 400GBASE-VSR4 standard supports 50m reach over OM4 fiber, while 400GBASE-SR4 supports 100m reach. The Arista OSFP-400G-VSR4 is fully compliant with the VSR4 standard and optically interoperable with SR4 modules, providing flexible deployment options for shorter data center links.

Q: Can this transceiver be used with standard MPO-12 connectors?
A: This transceiver requires MPO-12 APC (Angled Physical Contact) fiber connectors specifically. Unlike 40G and 100G parallel MMF optics that use standard PC/UPC connectors, 400G-VSR4 modules require APC connectors to reduce optical back reflectance and ensure optimal performance.

Q: Is this module compatible with InfiniBand networks?
A: Yes, the OSFP-400G-VSR4 supports both 400G Ethernet and InfiniBand NDR applications. It is compliant with InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA) Specification 1.6, making it suitable for high-performance computing and storage area networks requiring NDR connectivity.

Q: What Arista switches support this OSFP transceiver?
A: This transceiver is designed for Arista switches with OSFP ports that support 400G operation. It requires the port to be configured with 8 electrical lanes running at 50Gb/s PAM4 each. Consult Arista's transceiver compatibility guide for specific platform support and airflow requirements.

Q: Does this module support breakout to lower speeds?
A: While the OSFP-400G-VSR4 is designed for native 400G operation, breakout capabilities depend on the host switch configuration and software support. Some Arista platforms may support breakout to 4x 100G with appropriate cabling and switch configuration, but this should be verified with Arista documentation.
