FAQs

Q: What is the main difference between VSR4 and SR4 transceivers?
A: VSR4 (Very Short Reach) transceivers use MPO-12 APC angled connectors to reduce optical back reflectance, while traditional SR4 modules use MPO-12 PC/UPC un-angled connectors. VSR4 modules are optimized for 50m transmission over OM4 fiber and are compliant with InfiniBand NDR specifications.

Q: Can this transceiver be used in QSFP-DD ports?
A: No, the OSFP-400G-VSR4 uses the OSFP form factor which is physically different from QSFP-DD. However, Arista offers an equivalent QDD-400G-VSR4 model for QSFP-DD ports. Both provide the same optical performance and interoperability.

Q: What fiber types are compatible with this module?
A: This transceiver requires OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber with MPO-12 APC connectors. It supports distances up to 30m on OM3 fiber and up to 50m on OM4 fiber. Important: Only use MPO-12 APC connectors, not standard PC/UPC connectors used with other multimode optics.

Q: Is this module suitable for InfiniBand applications?
A: Yes, the OSFP-400G-VSR4 is compliant with InfiniBand Trade Association (IBTA) Specification 1.6 for NDR (Next Data Rate) applications. It supports both 400G Ethernet and InfiniBand NDR interconnects, making it versatile for data center and HPC environments.

Q: Does this transceiver support breakout configurations?
A: The VSR4 specification is primarily designed for 400G point-to-point links. While some 400G transceivers support breakout to 4x100G, breakout capability depends on the host system configuration. Consult Arista documentation for specific breakout support on your switch platform.
