Description

The Arista OSFP-400G-LR8 is a high-performance 400GBASE-LR8 optical transceiver designed for data center interconnect and long-reach 400G Ethernet applications. Supporting up to 10km transmission over duplex single-mode fiber with eight 50Gbps PAM4 optical lanes at 1310nm wavelengths, this OSFP module delivers reliable 400G connectivity for spine-leaf architectures, metro networks, and enterprise core deployments. The module features duplex LC connectors, DDM support, and compliance with IEEE 802.3bs and OSFP MSA standards.

Features

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between OSFP-400G-LR8 and QDD-400G-LR8?
A: Both modules support 400GBASE-LR8 with identical optical specifications and 10km reach. The primary difference is the physical form factor: OSFP is slightly larger at 22.6mm width versus QSFP-DD at 18.4mm width. Both use duplex LC connectors and support the same 8x50G PAM4 electrical interface. They can interoperate with each other as long as the switch ports match the physical form factor.

Q: Can the OSFP-400G-LR8 be used in 800G OSFP ports?
A: Yes, Arista 400G OSFP modules including the OSFP-400G-LR8 are backward compatible with 800G OSFP ports on compatible platforms. The switch will detect the 400G module and configure the port accordingly, provided the port has sufficient power budget and firmware support.

Q: What platforms support the OSFP-400G-LR8?
A: The OSFP-400G-LR8 is supported on Arista data center switches with OSFP ports, including 7060X6, 7800R3, and 7700R3 series platforms. Minimum EOS version requirements vary by platform. Consult Arista's Transceiver and Cable Guide for specific platform compatibility and EOS version requirements.

Q: How does LR8 differ from LR4 for 400G applications?
A: 400G-LR8 uses 8 optical lanes at 50 Gbps each across 8 different wavelengths multiplexed onto duplex LC fiber, while 400G-LR4 uses 4 optical lanes at 100 Gbps each. LR8 typically has lower cost and power consumption compared to LR4, and both support 10km reach over single-mode fiber with similar performance.

Q: Does the OSFP-400G-LR8 support breakout configurations?
A: The OSFP-400G-LR8 is designed primarily for native 400G point-to-point links over duplex LC fiber and does not support breakout to lower-speed interfaces. For breakout applications, consider modules like 400G-PLR4 or 400G-XDR4 which use MPO connectors and support breakout to 4x 100G links.
