Description

The Arista DCS-7280SR3AK-48YC8-FLX-F is a high-performance 1RU data center switch router delivering 3.6 Tbps throughput and 1.35 Bpps forwarding rate. Designed for demanding leaf-spine architectures, service provider peering, and data center interconnect, it combines 48 ports of 50GbE SFP connectivity with 6 ports of 200G QSFP (or 8x100G) uplinks. The AK variant features enhanced routing scale supporting up to 5 million IPv4 routes with FlexRoute, TunnelSec encryption with AES-256-GCM MACsec and IPsec capabilities, and an eight-core x86 CPU with 64GB memory and 120GB SSD for advanced control plane processing.

Features

Arista EOS (Extensible Operating System) with unified control and data plane
- FlexRoute scalable forwarding tables supporting over 5 million IPv4 routes
- TunnelSec line-rate encryption: MACsec, IPsec, VXLANsec with AES-256-GCM
- Layer 2 features: MLAG, LACP, VLANs, Spanning Tree (MSTP, RSTP, RPVST+)
- Layer 3 routing: OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, VRRP, ECMP, PIM, IGMP

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between the R3A and R3AK models?
A: The R3AK variant includes enhanced routing scale with FlexRoute supporting over 5 million IPv4 routes, TunnelSec encryption capabilities across all ports, expanded ACL support (>24K rules), and advanced MPLS LER/LSR functionality. It also features 64GB system memory and 120GB SSD storage compared to standard R3A models.

Q: Does this switch require a license for full functionality?
A: Yes, the FLX suffix indicates this model includes FlexRoute licensing for large-scale routing (up to 2M routes), EVPN, VXLAN, Segment Routing, and advanced MPLS features. The TunnelSec encryption features including MACsec, IPsec, and VXLANsec are also license-enabled on this model.

Q: Can the QSFP ports be configured for both 100G and 200G?
A: Yes, the 7280SR3AK-48YC8 features flexible QSFP-DD ports that can be configured as 4x200G QSFP-DD, 4x100G QSFP, or 8x100G QSFP depending on transceiver selection. The ports support 200G with 8x25G NRZ lanes and allow interoperability with 100G QSFP and 25G SFP modules through breakout configurations.

Q: What data center architectures is this switch suited for?
A: The 7280SR3AK is ideal for high-density leaf-spine topologies, internet peering, data center interconnect (DCI), service provider edge deployments, and EVPN-VXLAN overlay networks. Its large routing tables and deep buffers make it suitable for internet-scale routing, content delivery networks, and environments requiring lossless forwarding with encryption.

Q: What is TunnelSec and how does it differ from standard MACsec?
A: TunnelSec is Arista's line-rate encryption technology supporting IEEE 802.1AE MACsec for point-to-point link encryption, IPsec (RFC 4303) for layer 3 encrypted tunnels, and VXLANsec for overlay encryption. Unlike standard MACsec which only operates at layer 2, TunnelSec enables encrypted IP and VXLAN tunnels that can traverse multiple unencrypted hops, providing end-to-end encryption across third-party infrastructure using AES-256-GCM at wire speed.
