Description

The Cisco C9610-SUP-3XL is a high-performance supervisor engine designed for large-scale campus core and edge deployments requiring maximum Layer 2/3 forwarding scale and deep QoS buffers. Built around four Cisco Silicon One K100 ASICs with Q200L fabric connectivity, it delivers 51.2 Tbps system capacity and supports up to 2M IPv4 routes. This hot-swappable control-plane module operates in SSO high-availability mode and provides advanced routing, switching, and programmability capabilities for Cisco C9610R modular chassis.

Features

Cisco Silicon One K100 ASIC-based architecture with 6.4 Tbps per ASIC and 15.6 Bpps packet processing
- Q200L fabric ASIC for inter-chip connectivity delivering 25.6 Tbps full-duplex fabric capacity
- Large-scale forwarding tables: up to 2M IPv4 routes, 1M IPv6 routes, 128K MAC addresses, 256K HCAM entries
- Deep QoS buffering with HBM2E memory (256MB + 8GB) and VOQ architecture for AI-era microburst absorption
- Stateful Switchover (SSO) high availability with sub-second failover

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between C9610-SUP-3 and C9610-SUP-3XL?
A: Both supervisors share common hardware and performance but differ in feature scale. The C9610-SUP-3 is designed for medium-large Layer 2/3 deployments with medium QoS buffers, while the C9610-SUP-3XL is optimized for highest-scale campus core or edge deployments with large forwarding tables (up to 2M IPv4 routes), large ACL/FNF scale, and deep QoS buffers (256MB + 8GB). The 3XL uses four Cisco Silicon One K100 ASICs versus the E100 ASICs in the standard 3 model.

Q: Can I mix C9610-SUP-3 and C9610-SUP-3XL in the same chassis?
A: No. Cisco explicitly does not support mixing different supervisor models in a redundant configuration. Both supervisors in the chassis must be the same type (either both SUP-3 or both SUP-3XL). If different models are installed, the supervisor inserted later will remain in ROMMON mode and will not boot.

Q: What line cards are compatible with the C9610-SUP-3XL?
A: The C9610-SUP-3XL supports Cisco C9610 and C9600-series line cards including C9610-LC-32CD, C9610-LC-40YL4CD, C9600-LC-48TX, C9600-LC-40YL4CD, C9600X-LC-32CD, and C9600X-LC-56YL4C. All line cards receive up to 6.4 Tbps full-duplex bandwidth per slot from the supervisor.

Q: Does the C9610-SUP-3XL require a separate license?
A: The module is Network Advantage-capable, meaning it supports advanced features when the appropriate Cisco DNA or software license is applied at the chassis level. The supervisor itself does not require a separate purchase license to operate basic Layer 2/3 functions, but advanced features like MPLS, EVPN, and SD-Access require Network Advantage or Premier licensing.

Q: Is the storage on the C9610-SUP-3XL hot-swappable?
A: Yes. The supervisor supports hot-swappable SATA SSD modules in 240GB, 480GB, or 960GB capacities. A dedicated hot-swap button on the front panel safely ejects the SSD without disrupting the control plane. This enables application hosting, container support, and third-party agent deployment directly on the supervisor.
