FAQs

Q: Does the WS-C3850-24P-S include uplink ports?
A: The switch includes one network module slot for optional uplink expansion. Compatible modules include C3850-NM-4-1G (4x 1G SFP) and C3850-NM-2-10G (2x 10G SFP+), sold separately. The default configuration ships without a network module.

Q: What is the difference between IP Base and IP Services feature sets?
A: IP Base provides entry-level Layer 3 routing, 1000 VLANs, wireless controller functionality, and FlexStack-480 stacking. IP Services adds advanced Layer 3 features including full IPv4/IPv6 routing protocols. The WS-C3850-24P-S ships with IP Base and can be upgraded via license.

Q: Can this switch act as a wireless LAN controller?
A: Yes, with IP Base or higher, the switch supports embedded wireless controller functionality. Each switch or stack can manage up to 100 Cisco Aironet access points and 2000 wireless clients. Additional AP licenses may be required for controller mode.

Q: Is this switch compatible with existing Catalyst 3850 stacks?
A: Yes, the WS-C3850-24P-S can stack with other Catalyst 3850 Series switches using StackWise-480 cables. However, IP Base switches can only stack with other IP Base (or higher) switches; LAN Base switches must stack separately.

Q: What is the PoE+ power budget and per-port allocation?
A: The switch delivers 435W total PoE power budget with the default 715W AC power supply. Each port supports up to 30W per IEEE 802.3at PoE+ standard, suitable for IP phones, access points, and cameras.
